Twisted Sister - Live at the Astoria

Twisted Sister - Live at the Astoria

There's certainly nothing new that can be said about Twisted Sister either 'good' or 'bad' - they've been there, done it several times over and continue to live on strong over thirty years after they exploded onto the rock and roll horizon. This brand new DVD / Live Album captures the band on their huge comeback in 2004 and is an electrifying example of them at the top of their game performing to a packed London audience both old and new. Their reunion alone is admirable for the fact they managed to do it so legitimately with all original members and giving crowds exactly what they wanted with the classic image and songs untouched. The anthems sound as powerful as they ever did back in the day and front man Dee Snider's enthusiasm and energy is unmatched even now. It's all captured here in crystal clear quality and why it's taken so long for this to be released is puzzling but for the band's thousands of fans who still 'Wanna Rock' then this is the perfect rock and roll gift and worth the wait. Today, to the uninitiated or 'unscathed', Twisted Sister may look like a parody of Hard Rock but they are the ones who created it in the first place and have  continued to deliver the goods decades on. It may be a one trick hard rock assault but it's still great fun!

Wednesday 13 - F**k It , We'll Do It Live

Wednesday 13 - F**k It , We'll Do It Live

'This is a Rock n Roll Show, you're allowed to have fun!' announces Wednesday 13 in this monster full length live DVD filmed in Allentown, PA during the past summer. That's pretty much all what his music has been about and whilst the song titles and subject matter may be dark and horror filled, at the heart of it all is having a good time and enjoying yourself. Whilst treading into slightly more reflective and meaningful territory on the latest 'Skeletons' CD, which this tour was out promoting, the newer material still sits comfortable against older songs such as 'Look What The Bats Dragged In', '197666' and the ridiculous, hard rock genius that is 'Rambo' and 'I Love To Say Fuck'. Perhaps my only gripe is one that I've had for sometime when it comes to the W13 live show. You often feel that each show could be a carbon copy of the last other than inserting the town name into the well rehearsed between song banter. That said this is a DVD that comfortably captures the whole Wednesday 13 live experience which is foot to the floor from the beginning through to the end. Where the man goes from here will be interesting. Taking on board Director and Executive Producer status on this release may hint that he could easily head into more of a film making role like Rob Zombie did before him. Here's to the next reincarnation!

Bowling For Soup - Live & Very Attractive

Bowling For Soup - Live & Very Attractive

Bring on the first live Bowling For Soup DVD! Filmed in front of a sold out capacity crowd in Manchester back in October 2007 the band perform a 'Greatest Hits Set' with the audience singing along to every word. I was lucky enough to have been at this show and in the back of mind I was wondering what they had planned. What stroke of comedy genius did they have lined up and what surprises did they have in store? Actually it was nothing! They'd not planned on doing anything different and in that lies their secret. Nothing in between songs was rehearsed and the band feed off of what's happening around them at the time, whether it be things thrown on stage or seen in the crowd. The genius of this show is that if filmed on any other night it would have been totally different. I think the crowds know that too and it's why they always come back year after year regardless of hit singles or promotion. They know if they go see Bowling For Soup in say Manchester... they get their own Manchester show.... the same for Nottingham, Cardiff, London! It's very unique. Not only do we get the full length Big Rock experience here to watch but it's presented along with a live CD and bonus disk featuring footage from a bar in Denton, Texas as the band sit and watch the show with you and slowly get more and more drunk and random! The term 'Commentary' could be used very loosely as the band use this time to talk about pretty much anything other than the live show which is playing at the time! Brilliantly laid back, comedy gold! Die hards or those yet to be converted need this rock and roll gem in their collection if only to smile once in a while and be reminded of how fun rock and roll can be!
